The green metro fence on Rådhuspladsen will now disappear
Facts about the metro station at Rådhuspladsen
When the M3 line opens, Rådhuspladsen will have 14,000 daily passengers on an average weekday. At the same time, the journey time between Rådhuspladsen and Marmorkirken, for example, will be reduced from 23 to five minutes.
When the green metro fence is removed from Rådhuspladsen in the coming weeks, it will be the first step towards restoring one of the most central and historic squares in the heart of Copenhagen. Initially, the fence will be replaced by a wire fence that will form the framework for the redesign of Rådhuspladsen and prepare for the opening of the M3 line in July 2019.
‘The dismantling of the green fences marks the approaching opening of Copenhagen's new metro line, which will reduce congestion and connect the city in a completely new and sustainable way. Many of us are looking forward to it. Rådhuspladsen is one of the city's most important and historic squares, and it will be fantastic when the entire square is reopened for the benefit and enjoyment of Copenhageners and the city's many guests,’ says the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen.
The re-establishment of the square offers both happy reunions and innovations that connect past and future. When the contractor CMT takes down the fence, it may mean that the Dragon Fountain will have an even more prominent location than before, as it may be moved into the centre of the square. The fountain is as old as the City Hall and has thus stood on Rådhuspladsen for more than 100 years.
Andersens Boulevard.

* The press release is subject to final political prioritisation of funds for the relocation of Dragespringvandet. In November 2016, the Technical and Environmental Committee of the City of Copenhagen adopted the plan for how Rådhuspladsen will look when the M3 line opens in 2019. The plan includes a more central location for the fountain, Dragespringvandet. However, this is subject to the project being prioritised in the budget negotiations.
