The first metres of the M3 line open at Kongens Nytorv
Facts about
The metro station at Kongens Nytorv
When the M3 line opens, the metro station at Kongens Nytorv will become one of the three most visited stations in Denmark, while passenger numbers will more than double. Today, around 24,000 passengers use the Metro at Kongens Nytorv daily, while by 2025 the number will have grown to around 90,000 passengers.
Kongens Nytorv, together with Frederiksberg Station, will become metro hubs where the M3 line and the two existing metro lines intersect. The two underground stations will be connected by a pedestrian tunnel, making it easy to switch between the lines.
The M3 line
17 new metro stations will connect the bridge neighbourhoods with Frederiksberg and the inner city, while the M3 line will also be expanded with connections to both Nordhavn and Sydhavn. By 2025, the Metro will have 174 million passengers annually, and nine out of ten of Denmark's busiest stations will have a Metro station.
When the capital's new metro line, the M3 line (M3), opens later this year, Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg Station will become metro hubs where the new line and the two existing lines intersect. To make it as easy as possible for passengers to switch between the lines, the two underground stations at Kongens Nytorv will be connected by a pedestrian tunnel.
The tunnel will initially connect the new main staircase at the end of Strøget with the existing metro station. With the opening of the M3 line, the final section of the pedestrian tunnel will be inaugurated, allowing passengers to easily and quickly transfer between the existing station and the future station on the M3 line.
‘When the M3 line opens, the metro station at Kongens Nytorv will become one of the three most visited stations in Denmark, while passenger numbers will more than double. A new metro hub of this size requires easy and fast access. Therefore, we are pleased to welcome our customers to the Metro's new main staircase and the pedestrian tunnel that will connect the existing station with the new metro station when the M3 line opens,’ says Metroselskabet's Customer Director, Rebekka Nymark.
The opening of the main staircase and the underground walkway means that passengers will have to change their behaviour in the coming period. The stairway to the existing metro station will now be completely closed, while the lift at the stairs will remain closed. Passengers are therefore also encouraged to use the exit through the bicycle cellar.
‘We are very aware that the final phase of construction will also cause inconvenience for our customers, as construction and blocking will continue. Until the M3 line opens, we will therefore maintain our focus on clear signage and passenger information both underground and above ground, hopefully helping customers to travel quickly and easily,’ says Rebekka Nymark.
Until the M3 line opens, parts of Kongens Nytorv will continue to be blocked off and the area will be characterised by construction activity in connection with the design of the station square.
