Milestone: Rails connect the M3 line

Posted: 20. april 2018
The metro construction project reached a major milestone this week, as there are now rails all the way round the M3 line. It was marked today under Sortedams Lake.

The facts

The M3 line connects Østerbro, Nørrebro, Frederiksberg, Vesterbro and City with 17 new underground metro stations. The furthest station is just 12 minutes away and will provide a huge boost to the infrastructure in the capital.

Construction work on the M3 line began in 2011, and the new metro system is expected to open in summer 2019.

The M3 line is currently being test run under Vesterbro, Frederiksberg and Nørrebro. But during this year, the test run will be extended to the entire ring, so the new metro line will be ready to carry passengers when the M3 line opens in summer 2019.

This week, the M3 line was connected under Sortedams Sø. This was marked at the construction site on Øster Søgade, which was visited today by the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, the Mayor of Frederiksberg, Jørgen Glenthøj, and the Minister of Transport, Building and Housing, Ole Birk Olesen.

‘The Metro is an efficient and necessary form of transport in a capital city like Copenhagen, where the population is growing rapidly. With the expanded Metro, the city will be better able to accommodate the high demand for more housing. Now that the M3 line is physically completed and connected to the rails, we can really look forward to the doors opening to passengers next year,’ says Minister for Transport, Building and Housing Ole Birk Olesen.

The final phase before the opening

Construction work on the M3 line began in 2011, but as early as 2009, large areas were dug up to make room underground for the construction of a total of 17 underground stations.

‘The metro construction has long left its mark on the Copenhagen cityscape. It's fantastic that we've come so far with the rails, and from next summer we can hand back a city with top-class public transport - and with new, beautiful station squares with green trees and bushes and good opportunities to spend time. I'm very much looking forward to that,’ says Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.

All over the capital, the city and its visitors can feel that the metro construction is nearing completion. The large green construction site fences are coming down one by one, allowing landscapers to take over on the surface and prepare the station sites while the stations are completed underground and the trains are tested.

‘Today's marking was another important milestone on the journey towards the M3 line. In Frederiksberg, we can hardly wait for the ring to be completed, so that Frederiksberg and the rest of the capital will go from having a metro line to a metro network,’ says Jørgen Glenthøj, Mayor of Frederiksberg Municipality.

The M3 line's two tunnels are connected by rails. The subsequent casting work has been completed in one tunnel, while the casting work will be completed in the other tunnel over the next two weeks.
