Kongens Nytorv is now open to the public

Facts about

The metro station at Kongens Nytorv

Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg Station will be metro hubs where the M3 line and the two existing metro lines intersect. The two stations under Kongens Nytorv will be connected by a pedestrian tunnel, making it easy to switch between the lines.

The M3 line

The 17 new metro stations will connect the bridge neighbourhoods with Frederiksberg and the city centre. Later, the Metro will follow to both Nordhavn and Sydhavn. Once the M3 line is open, the number of journeys on the Metro is expected to double with approximately 122 million passengers in 2020.

As a visible sign that the opening of the capital's new metro line, the M3 line, is approaching, a large part of the wire fence is now being removed from Kongens Nytorv. In recent months, the fence has formed the framework for the work of decorating and restoring the beautiful square after several years of metro construction.

With the removal of the wire fence today, the entire north-western part of the square will be accessible to the public. This means that everyone can now get up close to the 80 newly planted imperial linden trees that once again adorn Copenhagen's largest square.

‘The opening of the M3 line is approaching, and many of us are looking forward to getting the city back after several years of metro construction. Not least the beautiful Kongens Nytorv square, which many Copenhageners and visitors pass by every day. The M3 line will give Copenhageners a completely new way of travelling in the city and bring us closer together throughout Copenhagen - with Kongens Nytorv as the new metro hub in the heart of the city,’ says Copenhagen Lord Mayor Frank Jensen (S).

In recent months, 900,000 paving stones have been laid as part of the re-establishment of the oval garden Krinsen, which was built by King Christian V in the 1600s. Until the M3 line opens, however, there will still be construction site fencing in part of the area, as the rest of the central square must be redesigned and restored before the capital's new metro line goes into operation.

‘It's very gratifying that we can now give part of Kongens Nytorv back to the people of Copenhagen. The square is one of the city's most iconic, and many people from all over the country have been waiting impatiently to be able to use the square with the many newly planted trees again. Many of the city's spaces and squares that have been hidden away in connection with the metro construction will be reborn much greener with the M3 line. It is important that we preserve the small green breathing spaces that Copenhagen is so well known for and that both Copenhageners and tourists can enjoy,’ says Karina Vestergård Madsen (Ø), Acting Mayor of Copenhagen for Technology and Environment.

When the M3 line opens, the metro station at Kongens Nytorv will become one of the three most visited stations in Denmark, while passenger numbers will more than double. Today, approximately 24,000 passengers use the Metro at Kongens Nytorv daily, while by 2025 the number will have grown to approximately 90,000 passengers.
