Iconic graffiti artwork resurrected on the metro fence in Sydhavn
Facts about the Sydhavn Metro
- The new metro line to Sydhavn will consist of five new stations from Havneholmen to Ny Ellebjerg and is expected to be completed in 2024.
- The five stations will be part of the new M4 metro line, which will run from Orientkaj in the north across City and on to Sydhavn.
- The Sydhavn line will be 4.5 kilometres long and approximately 29,000 passengers are expected to use the Metro daily at the five stations by 2035. This corresponds to 9 million passengers per year.
- With the Metro to Sydhavn, the many commuters will have easy and fast access to the Metro network from the new transport hub Ny Ellebjerg Station.
- Enghave Brygge is the first construction site to be built, and it is from here that the tunnel boring machines will later be put into the ground.
The construction of the new metro line to Sydhavn will begin shortly. This means that green construction site fences will be erected where the five future stations will be located. The fences will be decorated as on the M3 line, where more than 700 works have created new urban spaces during recent years of metro construction in the capital.
‘The artistic contributions and art installations on the metro fences over the last few years have been a fantastic contribution to the city space. Now the metro construction continues in Copenhagen's South Harbour, and fortunately there are still galleries on the construction site fences. Walls, walls and fences are usually the things that stop, slow down and close in and out. The fences around the metro construction site have a security function, of course, but they are also a huge canvas that opens up for more art in the city,’ says Copenhagen's Mayor of Culture and Leisure, Niko Grünfeld.
Today at Enghave Brygge, the longest and largest work that has so far adorned the metro fence will be unveiled. ‘Evolution part 2’, as the work is called, stretches over almost 500 metres of fence and is described by the artists behind it as Europe's longest continuous graffiti work. The work is a new creation and a continuation of a previous evolutionary work on the old graffiti wall ‘Hall of Fame’ at Enghave Brygge, which was demolished in 2016 to make way for urban development.

Siden slutningen af 1990’erne har en gammel mur fra et kullager på Enghave Brygge fungeret som lærred for graffitikunstnere fra ind- og udland.

Muren blev kaldt ”Hall of Fame” og blev revet ned i 2016 for at gøre plads til byudvikling. Muren stod, hvor metrobyggepladsen er i dag.

Udsmykningen på muren skiftede, men ét værk fik lov at stå uberørt i 17 år: Et 170 meter langt evolutionsværk malet af graffitikunstnere.

Metroselskabet har indgået et samarbejde med de graffitikunstnere, som stod bag det gamle evolutionsværk. Henover sommeren har de genopført og videreudviklet deres værk.

I alt har 14 graffitikunstnere fra ind- og udland bidraget til værket.

”Evolution 2” på metrohegnet er 470 meter langt og viser 12 nedslag i evolutionshistorien fra før The Big Bang og helt ud i fremtiden.

Værket er finansieret i et samarbejde mellem Metroselskabet, Coop og Flügger Maling.
”Når man siger ordet graffiti, så er der selvfølgelig altid nogen, der finder nejhatten frem. Men de bør tage ud at se Evolution 2. Kunst skal være tankevækkende. Og her slipper vi den kunstneriske frihed løs på en stor demokratisk væg, fordi det er kunst for alle københavnere. Også for dem, som ikke plejer at gå på galleri eller opsøger billedkunsten”, siger Niko Grünfeld.
Den gamle ”Hall of Fame” graffitivæg var 170 meter lang og er blevet beskrevet som et mesterværk inden for gadekunst. Evolutionsværket fik lov at stå uberørt på muren i 17 år. Det er nogle af de samme graffitikunstnere, der med hjælp fra 10 yderligere graffitikunstnere, har vækket værket til live på metrohegnet og malet universets historie fra The Big Bang og helt ud i fremtiden.
”Vi gik fra 170 meter til 470 meter, og de gamle fire kapitler blev til 12 nye kapitler, hvor vi fortæller brudstykker fra universets skabelse og ud i fremtiden. Mange kommer forbi og bliver begejstrede over, at der er kommet et nyt værk. Folk går nærmest tur i værket. Det adskiller sig fra alt andet, jeg har lavet før. Det er et engagerende værk, som får folk til at tale sammen – uanset alder”, fortæller Peter Skensved, som er en af kunstnerne bag værket.
