After more than eight years of construction work, the M3 line and its 17 new stations are just three months away from opening on Sunday 29 September.
The work to build the 17 new stations and get the driverless trains running is nearing completion. Between now and September, the final tests will be carried out and documented, and the metro will operate as normal - but without passengers.
This work will form the basis for the final regulatory approval, where a licence to operate with passengers will be granted. The permit is therefore dependent on the tests and documentation being in order and can only be obtained shortly before the Metro is ready to open in September.
Facts about the M3 line
- The M3 line's 17 new stations will connect Vesterbro, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro, Østerbro and the city centre.
- The M3 line will double the number of metro passengers already in the first year, with a total of 122 million metro passengers expected by 2020.
- The M3 line is the city's new M3 metro line, and the farthest station is a maximum of 12 minutes away, no matter where you get on.
- The M3 line will run driverless and 24 hours a day, just like the existing Metro, and during rush hour there will be a maximum of three minutes between departures, so you don't need a
timetable. - In 2020, the M3 will be supplemented by the M4 line, which will run from Copenhagen Central Station to Nordhavn and Orientkaj. The M4 will further increase frequency on the M3 line through the city centre.
‘We have built the Metro for the benefit of the many passengers who will soon find that they can get around the city easier and faster. We are very close to our goal and are looking forward to opening the doors. In the coming months, we need to get the final tests in place and run normal metro operations so that the authorities can complete their work on the crucial approval for us to be allowed to carry passengers,’ says Henrik Plougmann Olsen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metroselskabet.
‘The stations and the system are almost ready, and in the coming months we must ensure that all tests and documentation are in place and delivered in a proper quality so that the authorities can process it as part of the final approval. We are fully focused on ensuring that this is in place, but we will not be able to give a final guarantee for the opening date until close to the opening day. We believe that the timetable is realistic, but it is based on all parties delivering an efficient and coordinated effort to ensure a qualified basis for obtaining the final safety approval.’
