Construction of the Sydhavn Metro has started

Today, work on the construction of the new metro line to Sydhavn officially began when the first sod was cut at the construction site on Enghave Brygge. The Sydhavn Metro will open in 2024 and is expected to carry 9 million passengers a year.

The green metro fences have already been erected in several places in Sydhavn, and with the official kick-off, which was marked today at the construction site at Enghave Brygge, the construction of the 5 new metro stations is now underway in earnest.

‘With the new metro line to Sydhavnen, we are connecting Copenhagen better with a stronger and more efficient public transport network. Copenhageners will have better opportunities to get around the city faster, and the expansion of the metro network will also reduce congestion on the existing public transport network. Ny Ellebjerg will be the capital's new transport hub, where commuters will have easier access to the metro network and thus the rest of Copenhagen,’ says Minister of Transport, Building and Housing Ole Birk Olesen.

The Minister cut the first sod for the new metro line to Sydhavn together with the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, at the construction site at Enghave Brygge, where the tunnel boring machines will later be lowered into the ground and start the complicated work of boring the tunnels for the future Sydhavn metro.

‘Copenhagen is developing and growing by 10,000 new inhabitants a year. The Sydhavn Metro will connect the southern part of Copenhagen to the metro network, which will give a huge boost to public transport in the area. The new metro line will make it easier and faster to get to and from Sydhavn and around the rest of the city. At the same time, the Metro will help lift the old Sydhavn area, making it even more attractive to live in the entire Sydhavn neighbourhood,’ says Copenhagen's Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.

The Sydhavn Metro consists of five underground stations: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Ny Ellebjerg, where it will be easy for passengers to change to bus, regional and S-trains. This will distribute train passengers to the Metro in a system similar to that found in several European cities.
