Two bidders proceed in the tender to construct M5
Facts about the construction contract
The construction contract covers the first stage of M5 and includes, among other things:
- Two drilled tunnels
- Six stations - five underground stations and one high-rise station
- Five cross tunnels
- A ramp and a final shaft
- About two kilometers of viaduct
The contract is offered as a design and build contract with competitive dialogue with two prequalified bidders and has a value of approx. DKK 6.5 billion.
After further dialogue with the market, Metroselskabet re-tendered for the construction for the first stage of the upcoming M5 metro line earlier this year.
At the beginning of October, Metroselskabet received applications from companies that want to bid for the task. After reviewing the applications, Metroselskabet has now selected two strong consortia that will proceed in the tender process, where the upcoming phase offers close dialogue.
The two prequalified bidders are:
- The Havn5 JV consortium, consisting of: VINCI Construction Grand Projects, Hochtief Infrastructure and Aarsleff
- The M5VE consortium consisting of: Bouygues Travaux Publics S.A.S., Razel-BEC S.A.S. and MT Højgaard Danmark A/S
"We are pleased to be able to prequalify two strong teams with extensive experience from complex construction projects. This gives us a good starting point for the next phase, where we will qualify the solutions through a close and constructive dialogue and create the best possible basis for the final tenders," says Mikkel Kjær Jensen, Director of Construction at Metroselskabet.
As part of the competitive dialogue, Metroselskabet will now enter into a close dialogue with the two bidders on how the task can best be solved. The dialogue will help to qualify the solutions and adapt the tender documents before the consortia submit their final tenders.
"M5 is a complex construction project, and it is important that we together with the bidders create a solid basis for the final tenders. Therefore, I look forward to having a good opportunity to discuss the many aspects of the project in the near future, which will contribute to a strong project basis and a good implementation of the construction work," Mikkel Kjær Jensen continues.
Tenders with a focus on dialogue
Metroselskabet has organised the tender process so that the two bidders have a thorough knowledge of the project and its various risks before submitting their final bid at the end of 2027. This will give the companies a good basis for assessing the task and preparing their bids. Along the way, Metroselskabet will also discuss, among other things, the possibilities of reducing CO2 emissions for the construction work, workflows and processes, as well as the factors that have the greatest impact on the project's costs.
The contract is expected to be signed around the turn of the year 2027/2028, after which the actual construction of the M5 can begin. The first stage of the new metro line is expected to open in 2036.
