About M5
- M5 is a new, stand-alone metro line with nine stations, to be built in two phases.
- M5 will provide efficient public transport to both existing urban areas currently without metro service, including areas on Amager, and new urban development areas in the eastern harbour area — Kløverparken & Quintus, Refshaleøen and Lynetteholm.
- M5 will also increase capacity across the metro network, helping to ensure that the Metro can accommodate continued passenger growth — particularly on the cross-harbour section, which is already busy during peak hours.
- The first phase of M5 is scheduled to open in 2036 and will comprise five underground stations and one elevated station.
The tender for the construction of the future M5 metro line, which was withdrawn in August, is now ready to be reissued. Following further dialogue with the market, Metroselskabet has amended the procurement process for the M5 civil works contract.
The changes are intended to provide bidders with a stronger basis for understanding the scope of the work, the project framework and associated risks, and for submitting competitive and compliant tenders.
Competitive dialogue and continued focus on risk
The contract will be re-tendered through a competitive dialogue procedure and as previously anticipated, as a design-and-build contract. The competitive dialogue will enable closer and more focused discussions with the prequalified bidders before final tenders are submitted.
The tender documentation continues to place emphasis on risk, for both the contractor and Metroselskabet. This includes a target-price model for mechanical and technical installations, as well as architectural works.
Metroselskabet also continues to focus on CO₂ emissions from the construction works. The civil works contract includes a binding requirement to reduce CO₂ emissions.
Timetable unchanged
The re-tender will not change the planned opening date for M5. Metroselskabet’s assessment remains that the overall timetable can be maintained.
The re-tender and dialogue process will be planned in parallel with the parliamentary consideration of the Construction Act, which is still expected to be adopted by the end of 2026.
About the civil works contract
- In addition to the six stations, the first phase of M5 will include:
- Two bored tunnels of approximately 7 km;
- Five cross passages
- One ramp
- One terminal shaft
- Approximately 2 km of viaduct
- This is an EU procurement procedure, conducted following prequalification
