Reinvestments

Reinvestment projects
After more than 20 years in operation, there is an increasing need for us to continuously reinvest to maintain high operational stability. This is partly due to the wear and tear that occurs on a metro in operation, as well as new objectives for sustainability, passenger capacity and aesthetics.
Ongoing reinvestment projects
Metroselskabet has launched several reinvestment projects to increase the capacity of the Metro and maintain operational stability.

The capacity expansion on M1 and M2
In recent years, we have focused on expanding the capacity of the Metro to support our expected passenger growth in the future. In recent years, we have increased the number of trains in operation from 30-34, increasing capacity by 18% compared to 2017.
The 34th train in operation has reduced the time between departures to 95 seconds on the M1/M2 during rush hour.
In the coming years, we will continue to work on putting more trains into operation.

Life extension of first generation metro trains on M1 and M2
Following an EU tender, Metroselskabet signed a contract with Alstom to modernise the 34 trains that make up the first generation of metro trains on the M1/M2. Together, they have travelled more than 95 million kilometres - the equivalent of 2400 times around the world.
As a result, they are now facing a thorough modernisation, including a new floor, replacement of doors, installation of new passenger information screens and rearrangement of the seats in the train to provide more space.
In late summer 2023, we sent the first train for modernisation, and when it is expected to return in April 2025, 3-4 trains will constantly be taken out of service until the end of 2027, when the project is expected to be completed.
