Track laying is complete on the M4 Sydhavn

Posted: 28. marts 2023
A major milestone for the upcoming M4 Sydhavn metro line is now in place. All rails on the new line have now been laid in both directions, providing a connection between the Ny Ellebjerg terminus and Copenhagen Central Station. The new line will open in 2024, completing the M4 line that will run between Sydhavn and Nordhavn via the M3 line.

The facts

  • The M4 extension includes five new metro stations in Copenhagen: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Ny Ellebjerg (future København Syd).
  • When the line opens in 2024, there will be 44 metro stations in total.
  • From Copenhagen Central Station to Ny Ellebjerg (Copenhagen Syd) there are 5.7 kilometres of track each way. In 2024, there will therefore be 43 kilometres of metro tracks in total on all metro lines.
  • In 2024, 73% of citizens in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg will have less than 600 metres to a train or metro station.
  • M4 Sydhavn is expected to have approximately 9 million passengers annually. Overall, more than 100 million passengers are expected to travel on the Metro in 2024.
  • In 2024, Ny Ellebjerg will change its name to København Syd and will become one of Denmark's busiest stations, surpassed only by Nørreport, Copenhagen Central Station and Kongens Nytorv.

Copenhagen's Lord Mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metroselskabet Carsten Riis have travelled underground to inspect the completed rails and other construction work on the capital's future M4 Sydhavn metro line.

The completed rails mark a significant step towards the opening of the metro line in 2024, and work on the five new stations is now underway:

‘The construction of M4 Sydhavn means that in the future we can move around a larger part of the city in a green and efficient way. It also means fewer cars in the city because it will be much easier to get around with the Metro. When the M4 Sydhavn opens and creates a direct connection to Ny Ellebjerg, we will also have a better and more cohesive city with the opportunity to connect to other transport options and thus create a connection to the rest of the country,’ says Lord Mayor Sophie Hæstorp Andersen.

The Metro connects the city

The new section of the M4 line will have five new metro stations:

  • Ny Ellebjerg (future København Syd)
  • Mozarts Plads
  • Sluseholmen
  • Enghave Brygge
  • Havneholmen

Together with the other 39 metro stations, the opening means that 73% of citizens in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg municipalities will live within 600 metres of a train or metro station in 2024.

‘When the extension of the M4 to Sydhavn is completed in 2024, even more people will have access to efficient and environmentally friendly transport. Both the new and old Sydhavn and Valby have a large concentration of homes, businesses and educational institutions, and for many, the new metro line will mean completely new opportunities to move around the capital, while for others it means an easier and greener alternative to the car. At the same time, the line also opens up the district to the rest of the capital, which will have much easier access to Sydhavn's many green areas and attractive cultural and leisure life,’ says Carsten Riis, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metroselskabet.

Fast from Ny Ellebjerg to Rådhuspladsen

M4 Sydhavn will be connected to the existing M3 line and M4 Nordhavn, providing new opportunities to get around quickly to the traffic hubs in the capital. For example, the journey from Ny Ellebjerg to Rådhuspladsen will take just 10 minutes.

In addition, the Ny Ellebjerg terminus (København Syd) will eventually become one of Denmark's largest stations and thus not only the capital, but also a new regional and national transport hub with Metro, three S-train lines, regional and long-distance trains from Funen, Jutland and the rest of Zealand and the possibility of international trains from Germany and Sweden. København Syd will relieve Copenhagen Central Station, which is currently overloaded, and create a direct connection to Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund region.
