The new grove is now being planted at Rådhuspladsen

Today, the first trees are planted for a small grove that will create a green pocket on Rådhuspladsen at the opposite end of the city hall.
  • The facts

The City Ring is approximately 15.5 kilometres long (two tunnel tubes all the way around the M3 line) and 17 underground stations connect Østerbro, Nørrebro, Frederiksberg, Vesterbro and City.
  • The M3 line has left its mark on the capital for almost 10 years. The M3 line Act was passed by the Danish Parliament in 2007. This was followed by public consultations and an EIA process.
  • Several kilometres of supply lines and pipes (sewer, telephone, electricity, gas, etc.) were moved around in 2008-2010 to make room for the construction of the metro stations under the city. In the period 2009-2011, the Museum of Copenhagen also coordinated the largest archaeological excavation project in the capital.
  • In 2011, the actual construction work began.

The area once consisted of bus stops and a black bus terminal. Now a total of 59 trees are being planted on the area, where a cycle path snakes through a small grove near the main entrance to the future metro station.
Robinia, Norway maple, Norway maple, Japanese rowan, water spruce and red horse chestnut will be planted in the area between H. C. Andersens Boulevard and Vester Voldgade, giving cyclists a little breathing space in the centre of one of the city's vibrant squares. All trees are expected to be planted by Friday at the latest.

‘It's great that we're slowly getting Rådhuspladsen back, even in a better and greener version. The large metro fences are now gone from the M3 line construction sites, and while the stations are being completed underground, the squares at street level are getting ready to be occupied again. It will be good to have the city back - now with a new metro line underneath for the benefit of all the city's citizens and visitors,’ says Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.

The M3 line - including Rådhuspladsen metro station - is expected to open next summer. Rådhuspladsen metro station is expected to serve around 14,000 passengers a day, and from Rådhuspladsen, the M3 line (line M3) will take you to Frederiksberg Allé in just four minutes or to Trianglen in seven minutes.
