Record number of passengers in the Metro for the third month in a row

Posted: 5. december 2024
The popularity of the metro continues to grow. For the third month in a row, a record number of passengers travelled on the metro's four lines M1, M2, M3 and M4. Most recently in November, the Metro set a new record with 11.8 million passengers, while October and September also set records:
This is a positive development that we are very happy about. More people are choosing the Metro because it's fast, easy, sustainable and because you can get around the city without having to walk. We are constantly working to ensure that the Metro is the preferred choice when travelling in the capital,
says Director Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt, Metroselskabet.

Facts: Passengers travelling with the Metro

  • November: 11.8 million, a record for the third month in a row.
  • October: 11.4 million.
  • September: 11.2 million.
  • For the whole of 2024, around 125 million passengers are expected, corresponding to a growth of around 5% compared to 2023, when 120 million passengers travelled with the Metro.

The new stations on the M4 are a great success

Besides autumn being the Metro season due to the weather, Christmas parties and Christmas shopping, a major reason for the passenger increase is the opening of the five new stations on the M4 line to Sydhavn and Valby, combined with a general growth in passenger numbers.

"The new stations have been incredibly well received by both neighbours and businesses in the area. The passenger numbers for the stations are significantly exceeding our expectations, and there are more passengers overall, choosing the Metro," says Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt.

Seven per cent more passengers in the second half of 2024 compared to 2023

In the second half of 2024, there have so far been approximately 7 per cent more passengers in the Metro than in the corresponding months of 2023. However, despite the growth, Metroselskabet does not expect to fully meet the total passenger expectations in 2024:

"One of the reasons for this is that we shut down the M3/M4 lines for 16 days in the first half of 2024 to prepare for the opening of the five new stations on the M4 line to Sydhavn and Valby. Although passengers subsequently flocked to the new stations, the closure was not popular with our passengers and some were slow to return. At the same time, more homework and a lack of awareness that the metro can save time for some bus and train passengers also play a role. Therefore, we now expect passenger growth of around 5 per cent in 2024, corresponding to a total of around 125 million passengers," concludes Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt.
