Quality surcharges will be introduced in the Metro when the M3 line opens
Facts about the quality surcharge
- In the agreement in principle on the establishment of a M3 line from 2005 and in the M3 line's legal basis from 2007, it was decided that a quality surcharge would be levied on Metro customers when the M3 line opened.
- The law states that a quality surcharge of DKK 1 extra on average per passenger will be charged for using the entire metro system when the M3 line is completed.
- The quality surcharge is provided as part of the financing of the M3 line.
- Only passengers who choose to travel by Metro will have to pay a quality surcharge.
- For example, the surcharge could mean price increases of 6 per cent for a regular 4-zone travel card journey and 20 per cent for a 2-zone commuter card valid on the Metro.
- Customers will continue to check in and out as before, but Metroselskabet will make the Metro stands at major transport hubs more visible to make it as easy as possible for customers.
As part of the decision to build the M3 line, the M3 line Act stipulates that a surcharge will be levied on Metro customers when the capital's new Metro line opens. The reason for the decision is that with the M3 line, the capital will have a total of 37 metro stations that will make it easier and faster to move around the M3 line. The plan for how the surcharge will be applied to ticket products is now finalised. The surcharge only applies to customers who will use the Metro.
‘The M3 line, which is a huge infrastructure project, is partly financed by passenger revenue and contributions from the owners, and as part of the decision-making process, it was also decided to introduce a surcharge on top of the ticket price,’ says Rebekka Nymark, Customer Director at Metroselskabet.
The quality supplement is thus provided as part of the financing of the M3 line. The legal basis states that a surcharge of DKK 1 extra per passenger on average will be charged for using the entire metro system when the M3 line opens in summer 2019.
Metroselskabet has therefore worked on how the surcharge can be organised so that the surcharge is only charged on metro journeys.
The decided solution is based on a model where the quality surcharge is charged on ordinary Rejsekort at DKK 1.60 during rush hour and DKK 1.28 outside rush hour. On commuter cards, access to the Metro can be deselected. If you want to be able to use the Metro, the surcharge is set at DKK 80 per month. For the commuter combi card, you do not pay a special surcharge in advance, but you are charged DKK 1.60 per journey with a maximum of DKK 80 per month.
‘We know that our customers want it to be as simple and easy as possible to travel on the Metro and across bus, train and rail. The M3 line will mean a big boost to public transport in the capital with much better connections. But customers will also see a change in the pricing structure. We are therefore making a great effort to provide targeted and clear information about the changes and consequences that the quality supplement will have for our passengers. Among other things, we have been in dialogue with a number of commuter and consumer representatives to get their input on how to ensure the best communication,’ says Rebekka Nymark from Metroselskabet.
The quality supplement will come into effect when the M3 line opens in summer 2019 and will apply to journeys on all metro lines.

Metro stations get Danish pronunciation: No more Nuh-rah-broh and Fre-duh-rikz-berg
The English voice in the Metro previously announced the names of the metro stations in English, so Frederiksberg, for example, became Fre-duh-rikz-berg. At the request of tourists and international residents, these are now being changed to Danish.
