New metro line must now undergo environmental assessment
Facts about the environmental impact assessment
- The environmental impact assessment of the M5 must examine all relevant environmental perspectives of the chosen route, stations and reasonable alternatives. The environmental perspectives include, among other things, significant direct and indirect effects on e.g. the population and human health, biodiversity and impacts on e.g. land, soil, water, air and climate and cultural heritage. The report will also describe the environmental consequences of necessary facilities in connection with a branch chamber for a possible future Øresund Metro.
- The perspective study will address traffic effects and construction economics, but will not include the issues that an environmental impact report normally addresses, such as environmental conditions.
- In May/June 2023, Metroselskabet expects to enter into a contract with the consultant who will help prepare the environmental impact report.
- The report is expected to be finalised in early 2024, after which the report can be sent out for public consultation. Later, the final report must be adopted, which is expected to happen by the end of 2024.
The City of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg Municipality and the Danish state have now asked Metroselskabet to initiate the environmental impact assessment for the new M5 metro line.
During the spring, first the state and then the municipalities dealt with the matter, and now a joint group of owners has asked Metroselskabet to initiate the environmental impact assessment of the line.
An extended purple line
It has been decided that an ‘extended’ Purple Line will be studied, consisting of 10 stations from Copenhagen Central Station via Islands Brygge, Amagerbrogade and Refshaleøen to Lynetteholm and Østerport as well as a branch line to a possible future Øresund Metro. In addition, a perspective study will be carried out on the possibility of closing the ring with a metro line from Copenhagen Central Station to Østerport with stations at Gammel Kongevej, Forum, Stengade and Rigshospitalet. In addition, the possibility of establishing a branch on the line towards Brønshøj/Northwest is being looked at.
The new Metro line will provide Metro access to existing areas in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg as well as to new neighbourhoods. It will also help solve the capacity challenge of the current Metro across the harbour section and contribute to sustainable urban development in the new urban areas of Kløverparken, Refshaleøen and Lynetteholm.
Expected to be completed in 2024
The Company is responsible for preparing the environmental impact report, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The Company will initially select a consultant to help prepare the report, and then the actual studies will begin.
During the process, citizens will also have the opportunity to comment on the report in a public consultation phase where various engagement activities are planned. This is expected to take place in mid-2024.
