How the station areas in Sydhavn and Valby will look like

Posted: 16. oktober 2023
In 2024, the extension of the M4 metro line towards Sydhavn and Valby will open. The five new Metro stations will be accompanied by five new public urban spaces that invite people to play, spend time, provide ample bicycle parking and easy access to the Metro.

Facts about M4 Sydhavn:

  • The M4 extension includes five new metro stations in Copenhagen: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Ny Ellebjerg (future København Syd).
  • When the line to Sydhavn and Valby opens in 2024, the total metro network will consist of 44 metro stations and 43 kilometres of track.
  • From Copenhagen Central Station to Ny Ellebjerg (København Syd) there are 5.7 kilometres of track in each direction.
  • From 2024, you can get from Ny Ellebjerg (København Syd) to Rådhuspladsen in 10 minutes and to Frederiksberg in 13 minutes.
  • The M4 Metro line shares a control centre, control system, rails, Metro Stewards and much more with the M3 line.
  • M4 Sydhavn is expected to have approximately 9 million passengers annually. Overall, more than 120 million passengers are expected to travel on the Metro by 2024.
  • In 2024, Ny Ellebjerg will change its name to København Syd and become one of Denmark's new transport hubs.
  • The main contractors for the extension of the M4 metro line towards Sydhavn and Valby are TunnL3, Hitachi Rail and Rhomberg/Efacec.

More trees, benches and bike racks will ensure that the metro stations on the extension of the M4 towards Sydhavn and Valby will not be busy transit points in the city, but attractive new spaces for the enjoyment and benefit of the people who live and work near them.

The Metro will significantly lift the neighbourhoods and bind the city together - not only as a means of transport, but also as an aid to good communities and experiences for all neighbourhoods and the people who live and work in them,’ says Jesper Malmkjær, architect at Metroselskabet, and continues

‘The squares by the Metro are therefore also important and central. This is where residents get off the Metro and immediately feel at home in their local neighbourhood. Like the metro stations, the squares must be accessible, clear and safe, and for visitors, they must set the tone for the entire local area and the character of the surrounding neighbourhoods, while inviting people to take a break from everyday life,’ says Jesper Malmkjær.

Different purposes and functions

Architect Jesper Malmkjær explains that there has been a special focus on ensuring that the station squares interact with the surrounding environment and at the same time fit the needs of the neighbourhood.

‘At the Enghave Brygge Metro station, for example, there will be a large bicycle parking area with space for around 400 bicycles, as we expect a lot of bicycle traffic in the area when the Metro opens. In addition, there will be a staircase all the way down to the water to the south, giving people the opportunity to jump into the water in the summer or enjoy a break in the square when sailing past in a kayak or boat,’ says Jesper Malmkjær and emphasises that there are also several common features between the station squares.

‘Common to the station squares is that they all have good access conditions for both pedestrians and cyclists and will function as traffic hubs with interchanges between the Metro, bicycle, walking and bus, and where there is also space for rest, relaxation and play in pleasant surroundings. In addition, all the squares will have the metro elements we know from the rest of the city with lift towers, stairways and skylights where possible,’ he explains.

Havneholmen

The Havneholmen metro station is located on the former car park behind Fisketorvet. The station square will create a new urban space that will be both a traffic hub and a shopping destination, but also a green and calm breathing space with attractive and safe places to stay. The station square will include ‘plant islands’ with large trees and shrubs to improve the microclimatic conditions in the square, which is currently plagued by both strong winds and traffic noise. The metro station will serve customers travelling to Fisketorvet and the many new residential and commercial areas in and around Havneholmen.

Mozarts Plads

The Mozarts Plads metro station is located on the edge of the square, which provides good opportunities to spend time in the area around the station. The square will continue to be a traffic centre, but the social aspect will be strengthened as the square will be designed as a green urban space with opportunities for stays, events and other activities. The aim is to promote safety in the square by designing the square so that people feel more like they are in a city park than in the centre of a city square. The square is designed with large rainwater basins for rainwater management, a new fountain, long winding benches and a lawn that creates numerous opportunities for everyone to spend time. The bicycle parking is gathered along Borgmester Christiansens Gade to ensure a functional and delimited location and to keep the rest of the square free for use.
