The facts
- The possible new Metro line M5 will provide Metro access to both existing urban areas and new neighbourhoods. It will also help solve the capacity challenge of the current Metro across the harbour and contribute to sustainable urban development in the new urban areas of Kløverparken, Refshaleøen and Lynetteholm.
- The line is expected to consist of 10 stations from Copenhagen Central Station via Islands Brygge, Amagerbrogade and Refshaleøen to Lynetteholm and Østerport. In addition, a perspective study will be prepared on the possibility of closing the ring between Copenhagen Central Station and Østerport with several stations.
- Advice on land and rights includes main tasks such as handling landowner and neighbour relations on behalf of Metroselskabet, establishing the basis for and carrying out inspections and expropriation, risk assessment of expropriations, contributions to technical agreements for construction and operation, and completion of cadastral rectification of any construction.
- Metroselskabet has an ambition to reduce the climate impact of new metro lines, including the M5, by 50 per cent compared to previous lines. At the same time, there must be focus on the customer experience, the Metro's contribution to the city, including social sustainability, as well as safety and occupational health and safety in both construction and operation.
The consultancy firm COWI, with the land surveying firm LE34 as sub-consultant, will assist Metroselskabet with the consultancy assignment in the area of land and rights in connection with the preparations for a possible new metro line, M5.
The consultancy assignment in the area of land and rights includes planning and execution of expropriations in connection with a possible establishment of the M5, and the assignment also includes a significant amount of dialogue with landowners, neighbours, developers, etc. on various issues related to the project.
‘It is crucial that we have advisors in the area of land and rights that can help secure the project's land needs and at the same time be in good process and dialogue with the neighbours who may be affected. COWI has shown good understanding of the complexity of the task, including how to incorporate sustainability into the project. We look forward to working with them on the M5,’ says Mathias Mark Bornæs, Unit Manager at Metroselskabet.
Specialist assignment
COWI was chosen after an EU tender with negotiation. In total, there were two bidders, both of whom delivered high-quality, thoroughly prepared tenders and provided a team of competent consultants.
‘This is a specialised assignment that requires special skills and a great overview, and we have had good discussions with both bidders,’ says Mathias Mark Bornæs.
With the new contract, another consultant is on board the M5 project. Earlier this year, a consortium consisting of COWI and Arup was chosen as the consultant for environmental impact assessment, pipeline relocations and civil engineering.
‘We look forward to ensuring a good dialogue with neighbours and helping to increase urban biodiversity for the benefit of both people and nature,’ says Gitte Godsk Dalgaard, Senior Vice President at COWI.
