The future operation and maintenance contract (O&M)

Operation and maintenance of the Metro

Metroselskabet has overall responsibility for the operation of the Copenhagen Metro, but day-to-day operations and maintenance are handled by a private operator.

Internationally, there are few tenders for operation and maintenance contracts because most metro owners are also responsible for their own operations. However, as prescribed by the Danish Metro Act, Metroselskabet is obliged to put the task of operating the Metro out to tender in an EU tender.

New contract up for tender this summer

The current operation and maintenance contract for metro lines M1-M4 expires on 28 September 2027. Therefore, work is underway to tender a new contract starting on 29 September 2027. Since 2023, work has been underway to create a competitive tender in close dialogue with the market in several market dialogues.

On 30 June 2025, the tender will be published on the Byggeprojekt.dk tender portal. The future operation and maintenance contract will run until 2039.

What is involved in being an operator?

The operator is responsible for the daily operation of the Metro. This means ensuring that the Metro runs on time and that the trains are maintained and cleaned. It is also the operator's job to monitor operations to ensure that everything is running according to plan.

So it's our operator that you meet on the train when you check your ticket, and it's their job to provide good customer service at the metro stations, on the phone and online.
