The M4 metro line to Sydhavn and Valby opens this summer

Posted: 8. januar 2024
When the calendar turns to summer, the capital will get even more metro when the M4 metro line is extended with five new stations in Sydhavn and Valby. The final date will be announced three months before the opening.

The extension of the M4 metro line towards Sydhavn and Valby is progressing rapidly. The plan is to open this summer and connect two new neighbourhoods in Copenhagen to the metro network.

"The metro extension to Copenhagen South will better connect the city and make the neighbourhoods even more attractive to live and work in. I'm therefore very pleased that we can now announce the opening of the five new metro stations in Sydhavn and Valby this summer. They will bring new life to the neighbourhoods - and indeed to the entire city and region. The metro makes Copenhagen smaller and bigger at the same time. It makes travelling from one end of the city to the other easier and climate-friendly. Together with the bicycle, attractive public transport must be the natural choice in our city, which is why we need much more metro in Copenhagen," says Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen.

When the new southern section of the M4 is opened, you can travel directly between Orientkaj in Nordhavn and Copenhagen South. Along the way, you can transfer to the M3 Cityring at six stations and to the M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv. In addition, it will be possible to switch between S-trains and regional trains at Copenhagen South, Copenhagen H and Østerport and S-trains at Nordhavn.

"When five new stations are added to the Metro this summer, public transport in the capital will become even more robust and accessible, providing passengers with more connections in and out of the city, to the rest of the country and eventually to Europe. Copenhagen South will be one of Denmark's largest stations, where we expect passengers to get on or off a metro train more than 30,000 times a day," says Mayor of Frederiksberg Municipality, Michael Vindfeldt, adding:

"One of my most important tasks is to ensure a well-functioning and future-proof metro throughout the city. And with the opening of the five new stations, the prospects and the possibility of expanding with more metro from Copenhagen South to Frederiksberg are strengthened."

Opening on time

Work on the metro extension to Sydhavn and Valby began in August 2018 and despite the coronavirus pandemic and supply chain pressures, it has stayed on track for all five years - and will soon benefit a whole lot of Copenhageners.

However, there are still a number of important deliverables and milestones to be achieved before Metroselskabet can set a concrete date for the opening - the most important of which will be the approval from the Danish Transport Authority to operate with passengers. But first, the five new stations must be connected to the existing metro system, which will affect operations on the M3 and M4, as the overall control system must be tested and adjusted. In addition, passengers are likely to experience other minor disruptions to the Metro's otherwise stable operations in the run-up to the opening.

Metroselskabet expects to be able to announce the specific date approximately three months before the opening.

Facts about the M4 line

  • The M4 extension includes five new metro stations in Copenhagen: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Copenhagen South.
  • With the opening of the five new stations, it will be possible to switch between metro and S-trains at eight stations and between metro and regional trains at six stations.
  • When the new stations open, the journey time by Metro between Copenhagen South and City Hall Square will be approximately 10 minutes and to Frederiksberg approximately 13 minutes.
  • From 2030, the five new stations are expected to have approximately 8 million passengers annually. In the first few years after opening, the annual passenger numbers will be lower because it takes time to get people used to a new line.
  • Overall, more than 135 million passengers are expected to travel on the Metro by 2024.
  • After opening, the total metro network will consist of 44 metro stations and 43 kilometres of track.
  • M3 and M4 share a common driverless control system with common stations, trains and tracks between Østerport, Marmorkirken, Kongens Nytorv, Gammel Strand, Rådhuspladsen and Copenhagen H.
  • A temporary suspension of M3 and M4 operations is required to adjust and test the control system so that the five new stations in Sydhavn and Valby can be connected to the existing metro system.
  • The main contractors for the extension of the M4 metro line towards Sydhavn and Valby are Tunn3L, Hitachi Rail and Rhomberg/Efacec.
