Passengers can look forward to more metro trains on M1 and M2
As part of a major effort to accommodate the many passengers who use the Metro on a daily basis, Metroselskabet is now operating up to 32 Metro trains on the M1 and M2 metro lines, which is a record.
The extra trains in operation are the first of several initiatives to increase the Metro's capacity by 10 per cent over the next six months. The aim is to meet the expected high passenger demand so that customers will continue to experience a high-quality journey in the future.
‘The capital is getting more and more citizens, and many are choosing to travel on the Metro. That's why we want to ensure that there is room for passengers in the future and that they continue to have a good experience. With more trains in operation on M1 and M2, we create space for both the approximately 200,000 daily travellers on the two lines and the many new passengers,’ explains Rebekka Nymark, CEO of Metroselskabet.
Extensive testing and additional trains in operation
At the same time, Metroselskabet is working to prepare the Metro to operate with an even higher train frequency of as little as 90 seconds during rush hour in the longer term.
‘We're working on various initiatives to ensure that we can continue to offer a good travelling experience for our customers in the long term. For example, we have bought more trains and have started modernising the older trains. The fact that we can now also run more trains on the M1 and M2 is a very important milestone in this work,’ says Rebekka Nymark.
The commissioning of more - and new - trains has been thoroughly prepared in collaboration with supplier Hitachi and Metro's operator, Metro Service. In the coming months, the plan is to gradually deploy more trains during rush hour.
The capacity increase is made possible through the M1 and M2 Investment Programme, which aims to increase capacity several years ahead. A number of projects under the Investment Programme have paved the way for more capacity, including the purchase of more trains, improvements to tracks and the driverless control system, and expansion of the Control and Maintenance Center for the two lines at Amager.
