Six months after the opening of the M3 line, the M4 line will open its doors to passengers on Saturday 28 March. With the opening of the M4, passengers between Copenhagen Central Station and Østerport can look forward to twice as many departures - and the many people who either live or work in Nordhavn will be connected to the metro network. At the same time, the entire Nordhavn neighbourhood can look forward to more visitors to, among other things, the many fine recreational opportunities in the area.
‘The Metro has made Copenhagen a true metropolis. It brings us closer together and creates new experiences for everyone. With the Nordhavn Metro, we get much more Metro - and to a whole new part of the city that has previously been difficult to access. I hope that many Copenhageners and visitors will now make the trip to Nordhavn and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. At the same time, I'm sure the residents will benefit from the new hotline to the rest of the city,’ says Lord Mayor Frank Jensen.
Facts about the M4
- The M4 metro line runs from the two new stations Orientkaj and Nordhavn via Østerport, Marmorkirken, Kongens Nytorv, Gammel Strand, Rådhuspladsen to Copenhagen Central Station. Until the opening of the Sydhavn branch line in 2024, the line will have a total of these 8 stations - after that, line M4 will be expanded with an additional 5 stations on the branch line from M3 line to Sydhavn.
- The opening of the M4 means that the frequency of departures will double between Østerport and Copenhagen Central Station. During rush hour, there will be a departure in each direction every 1.5 minutes on this route.
- The contracts to build the Nordhavn branch from the M3 line were signed in 2014, more than three years after the contracts were signed for the M3 line. As it was always known that the M4 would open after the M3, it was also clear that the test run on the M4 would affect operations on the M3.
- The M4 is expected to open on Saturday 28 March 2020, subject to final permission from the authorities to operate passenger services on the line.
- With the opening of the M4, the Copenhagen metro network will add the two stations Orientkaj and Nordhavn, bringing the total number of metro stations to 39.
To ensure a good start to the test run on line M4, the M3 line M3 Cityringen was closed from 12 January. The M3 line is expected to reopen to passengers as planned on the night of Monday 27 January. - Approximately 12 million passengers travelled on the M3 line before the temporary closure due to the M4 test run. The opening of the M3 line also boosted passenger numbers on the M1 and M2. On the night of Monday 27 January, the M3 line will reopen for passengers.
- The two stations Nordhavn and Orientkaj will serve approximately five million passengers a year by 2025, and the M4 line is also expected to have a positive effect on passenger numbers on the M3, as the line ensures twice as many departures on the route between Østerport and Copenhagen Central Station.
The test run has gone well
Over the past two weeks, the M4 has been connected to the M3 City Ring, as the lines share the control system and trains as well as tracks and stations on the Østerport to Copenhagen Central Station line. During this period, the M3 City Ring has been closed so that the connection of the M4 can run smoothly and safely.
On the night of Monday (27 January), the M3 line will reopen for passengers. In the months leading up to the opening of the M4, test runs will be carried out on the entire line, while the Nordhavn and Orientkaj stations undergo the final finishing touches.
‘The city will be connected in a whole new way with the opening of the M4, and we will create a more efficient public transport network for the benefit of passengers, who will experience more travel options,’ says Minister of Transport Benny Engelbrecht.
Two extra stations will be connected to the metro network
With the opening of M4 Nordhavn, the total number of metro stations in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg will reach 39. The work to establish a metro line to Nordhavn and Orientkaj was approved in 2014 - just over three years after the M3 line.
‘In many ways, the M4 to Nordhavn has been overshadowed by the M3 line construction work. This is actually positive, because the construction work at Nordhavn and Orientkaj stations has gone according to plan. The contractor has had good control of both safety and schedules. This is satisfactory, and we are now looking forward to the opening of an extra metro line that will delight passengers from Copenhagen Central Station to Orientkaj,’ says Jørn Neergaard Larsen, Chairman of the Board of Metroselskabet.
