Facts: About the extension of the M4 to Sydhavn and Valby

  • The M4 extension consists of five new metro stations in Copenhagen: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Copenhagen South.
  • When the new southern section of the M4 is opened, you can travel directly between Orientkaj in Nordhavn to Copenhagen South in Valby via Østerbro, City, Vesterbro and Sydhavn. Along the way, you can transfer to the M3 Cityring at six stations and to the M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv.
  • With the opening, it will be possible to switch between metro and S-trains at eight stations and between metro and regional trains at six stations.
  • After opening, the total metro network will consist of 44 metro stations and 43 kilometres of track.
  • When the new stations open, the journey time by Metro between Copenhagen South and City Hall Square will be approximately 10 minutes and between Copenhagen South and Frederiksberg approximately 17 minutes
  • The metro line runs around the clock with high frequency and will better connect the new urban development areas and existing urban areas in Sydhavn and Valby.
  • From 2030, the five new stations are expected to have approximately eight million passengers annually. In the first few years after opening, the annual passenger numbers will be lower because experience shows that it takes time to get people used to a new line.
  • Overall, more than 135 million passengers are expected to travel on the Metro by 2024.

In just over three weeks' time, passengers will be able to use the new combined metro network for the first time when the M4 to Sydhavn and Valby is inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony on 22 June. The new metro line will better connect the city and make it easier for residents and visitors to get around quickly. The M4 extension will also contribute to an even stronger and more efficient public transport network in the capital.

"When the M4 to Sydhavn and Valby opens, customers will find it easier, faster and more sustainable to travel around the capital. With the M4 extension, the M3 Cityring and M4 Nordhavn will be connected to the Copenhagen South transport hub, which will eventually become one of Denmark's largest. With the inauguration of the new metro line, we would like to thank our neighbours for their patience and welcome customers to the Metro with a big opening party, music, entertainment and lots of activities," says Erik Skotting, director at Metroselskabet.

On Saturday 22 June, the inauguration of the new metro line will kick off with a big street party at Mozarts Plads. The festivities to mark the inauguration start at 11:00 with entertainment, live music and activities including food trucks, silent disco and a flea market. Everyone is welcome to the event, and various artists will entertain on stage throughout the day, including Peter AG, Peter Sommer, Katinka, Carl Emil Petersen, JJ Paulo and more.

At 12.30 pm, the metro line will be opened by HM the King, with the Minister of Transport, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen and the Mayor of Frederiksberg also in attendance. At the same time, the five new stations will open for passengers and staff will be on hand at the stations to welcome customers.

"It will be a great pleasure to open the doors for M4 to Sydhavn and Valby for both current and future customers. Our primary focus is on ensuring a good travelling experience for users, and we know that many in Sydhavn and Valby have been looking forward to an easier everyday life, where you can get from Copenhagen South to Rådhuspladsen in about 10 minutes and from Copenhagen South to Frederiksberg in about 17 minutes. The M4 extension will connect several areas of the city for the benefit of everyone," says Erik Skotting.

When the new southern section of the M4 is opened, you can travel directly between Orientkaj in Nordhavn and Copenhagen South. Along the way, you can transfer to the M3 Cityring at six stations and to the M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv. It will also be possible to switch between S-trains and regional trains at Copenhagen South, Copenhagen H and Østerport and S-trains at Nordhavn.
