Metroselskabet continues to grow and delivers profits above expectations

In 2024, Metroselskabet delivered a satisfactory result before depreciation and amortisation of DKK 244 million - an improvement of DKK 136 million compared to 2023 and DKK 11 million more than expected for the year. The positive result comes from a total revenue of DKK 2,326 million, of which passenger revenue totalled DKK 1,608 million, which is DKK 175 million more than in 2023.

New passenger record for the Metro

The increase from 2023 to 2024 was partly due to approximately six million more passengers travelling on the Metro in 2024, bringing the total number of passengers to 126 million compared to 120 million last year. This is a growth of around five per cent and the highest passenger numbers in one year in Metro's history. Despite the growth, The Company did not fully meet the total passenger expectations in 2024, primarily due to lower growth on M3.

This year's figures show a stable high customer satisfaction and operational stability of 99 per cent. At the same time, Metroselskabet has invested in increasing capacity:

  • In October 2024, train number 34 was put into operation on the M1/M2 during rush hour, reducing the interval between trains to 95 seconds.
  • Together with two additional trainsets in autumn 2023, this has increased rush hour capacity by 10 percent in just under a year.

The continued growth in passenger numbers underlines Metro's role as a key part of the capital's public transport system and an essential part of both regional and national transport. We are constantly working to improve the customer experience, for example by optimising operations and expanding capacity,’ says Carsten Riis, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Metroselskabet.

M4 extension exceeds expectations

The biggest event for Metroselskabet in 2024 was the opening of the M4 to Sydhavn and Valby. The day was marked with great support from the citizens, who gathered at Mozarts Plads to watch HM the King, the Minister of Transport, the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen Central Station and the Mayor of Frederiksberg cut the ribbon for the new line.

With five new stations connecting Copenhagen Central Station with København Syd, the M4 extension has quickly proved to be a valuable addition to the capital's infrastructure. The five new stations had a passenger number of approximately three million in 2024, which is about twice as many as expected,’ says Carsten Riis.

The prerequisite for delivering the coveted line to the passengers is a well-executed construction project, as the metro line was opened on time, within budget and with a realisation of benefits in terms of passenger numbers.

We are proud that we were able to open the M4 extension on time, on budget and on quality, which is a rarity for such complex construction projects. It is of great importance to society and has required great flexibility and co-operation from our contractors on the project. The lessons learnt can be applied not only to future metro projects, but also to the construction industry in general,’ says Carsten Riis.

Growth is expected to continue in 2025

In 2025, Metroselskabet again expects more passengers in the Metro with a target of 131 million passengers for the year, which will be an increase of approx. 5 million compared to 2024. The growth will continue to come primarily from more passengers in M3 and M4, partly in continuation of the opening of M4 to Sydhavn and Valby.
