M5 - future metro line

New metro line

The M5 is a future standalone metro line with 9 stations that opens in two phases in 2036 and 2045 respectivily.

The M5 will provide efficient public transport to both existing urban areas that currently do not have metro service (on Amager), as well as new urban development areas, including in the East Harbour (Kløverparken, Refshaleøen and Lynetteholm). At the same time, M5 will increase the capacity of the overall metro network and ensure that the Metro can also keep up with the increasing number of passengers in the future, especially on the section across the harbour, where capacity is already under pressure during rush hour.

About the line

The future M5 metro line is planned to be built in two phases. The line will have six stations in the first phase and three stations in the second phase.

CO2 reductions with the M5

The planning of the M5 is underway and the possible future line has been environmentally assessed. In the video you can see where we have already identified possible CO2 reductions of 20 per cent compared to  previous lines.

Feasibility study for metro lines

In October 2018, the state and the City of Copenhagen signed an agreement in principle on Lynetteholm, and subsequently it was decided to investigate how the M5 can support sustainable urban development in the new urban development areas in the East Harbour (Kløverparken, Refshaleøen and Lynetteholm).

In August 2020, the feasibility study for Metro Services in the East Harbour was ready with three possible main proposals:

- M5 (purple line): Copenhagen H to Østerport.
- M5 West (orange line): Lynetteholm to Prags Boulevard East (Kløverparken)
- M4 (blue line): Orientkaj to Kløverparken.

More consultations

In August 2022, the City of Copenhagen decided to initiate an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process for the M5. This was initiated with an eight-week idea phase consultation based on two possible alignments, M5 Orange and M5 Purple.

Based on the idea phase consultation, the City of Copenhagen decided in February 2023 that the comprehensive concept design of the possible route and the MKV itself would be based on M5 Purple.

Metroselskabet then began work on the concept design of M5 and the preparation of the MKV. On 20 June 2024, the City of Copenhagen decided to send it out for eight weeks of public consultation together with a perspective analysis with additional stations between Copenhagen Central Station and Østerport.

Optimisations and further process

In the concept design work, the line has been optimised for the benefit of the passenger experience and construction economy, and the City of Copenhagen has therefore decided to prepare a supplementary EIA, which is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025, after which the City of Copenhagen will submit it for consultation and subsequently process the consultation responses politically.
