Extension of the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn

Metro to Ydre Nordhavn

The metro network will be expanded in Ydre Nordhavn with two new stations planned for completion in 2030.

The alignment is an extension of the M4 from Orientkaj Station to two new stations: v/Levantkaj and v/Nordhavn C (at Tunnelfabrikken). Both stations are elevated railway stations.

With this alignment, passengers at the two new stations will have direct access to the inner city and traffic hubs with a journey time of approximately 7 minutes. from the terminus at Nordhavn C (at Tunnelfabrikken) to Østerport - and approx. 14 minutes to Copenhagen Central Station.

Why metro to Ydre Nordhavn?

Nordhavn is the City of Copenhagen's largest current urban development area, and when Nordhavn is fully developed around 2060, 35,000 people are expected to live in Nordhavn.

In March 2020, the two metro stations Nordhavn and Orientkaj opened in Inner Nordhavn with new, fast connections to the rest of the city, and today, 7,000 residents and visitors get on or off one of the two stations on a typical weekday. Now it's time to extend the tracks to Ydre Nordhavn, where two new stations will help ensure efficient public transport between Nordhavn and the city centre for the new residents, students and jobs moving in over the coming years.

The metro extension will ensure that approximately 80 percent of the urban area in Ydre Nordhavn will be within 600 metres of the nearest metro station.

A more climate-friendly metro

With the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn, you get more metro. But you also get a metro with a lower climate impact.

When working on the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn, the goal for the overall project is to reduce the climate footprint by 50 per cent compared to the existing line in Nordhavn.

Much of the CO2 savings can be realised in the design phase by working with new materials and methods in metro construction. Kraks Fond Byforskning also produced a report in 2016 (by researchers from DTU, among others), which shows that the establishment of a metro can have a major effect on local car ownership - but the further you move away from the metro stations, the lower the effect.

The report shows that car ownership around the stations can decrease by up to 14 per cent when a metro is established.

Line routing

The chosen route is an extension of the M4 from Orientkaj Station to two new stations: v/Levantkaj and v/Nordhavn C (at Tunnelfabrikken). Both stations are elevated railway stations.

With this alignment, passengers at the two new stations will have direct access to the inner city and traffic hubs with a journey time of approx. 7 min. from the terminus at Nordhavn C (at Tunnelfabrikken) to Østerport - and approx. 14 minutes to Copenhagen Central Station. With a change at Kongens Nytorv, you can reach the airport in about 27 minutes.

The metro line ensures that approximately 80 percent of the urban area in Ydre Nordhavn has a maximum of 600 metres to the nearest metro station.

The further process

In September 2023, politicians in Copenhagen decided that Metroselskabet should continue working on an alignment with two stations in Ydre Nordhavn. In February 2025, Metroselskabet announced the first phase of an EU tender, and the winner of the tender is expected to be announced in late 2025. When the further plan for the M4 Outer Nordhavn project is finalised, we will update the information on this page and inform via the press etc.

The goal is for the two new stations on the M4 in Ydre Nordhavn to open in 2030. If you want to know more about the technical preparatory work and political decisions on the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn, read more in the summary report from August 2023 - or in the technical study report.
