Tour de France set a new passenger record in the Metro

Posted: 2. juli 2022
Friday's stage 1 of the Tour de France in Copenhagen had citizens and visitors flocking to the Metro, and for the first time since 2019, a new passenger record was set in a single day on all Metro lines.

Facts about the Metro during the Tour de France

  • The total number of passengers for the entire Metro was 569,000 on Friday 1 July 2022
  • The newest metro lines M3/M4 also set a new record with a total of 305,000 passengers
  • There was extra staff in the control room, where employees monitor all stations, passengers and trains
  • To accommodate the large number of passengers, rush hour operations were run on both Friday and Saturday (down to less than 2 minutes between departures)
  • Extra stewards were stationed to help passengers with advice and guidance at stations and on trains
  • Extra signage was installed both at street level and at stations

In addition to shining in the centre of Copenhagen, the Tour de France riders indirectly set a new record on Friday afternoon. The total metro system set a new record with 569,000 passengers, which is more passengers than ever in a single day. With the closure of large parts of Copenhagen city centre, the Metro proved to be an attractive transport option in the festive capital.

Operationally, the day was also a success, and customers experienced a very high level of operational stability. On M3/M4, the overall operational stability was 99.9 per cent, while it was 99.4 per cent on M1/M2. This equates to 32,600 departures running as planned. Although the Metro's capacity was tested in every way, the emergency response worked as planned and a good passenger flow was ensured throughout the day despite the extraordinary number of people in the Metro. As expected, the many passengers used the newest metro lines, M3/M4, in particular.

‘It is gratifying that so many passengers chose to use the Metro to get back and forth during the historic cycle race. As expected, it was very busy, so it was nice to see that people showed both consideration and patience on a day with extra congestion in the system. The fact that we both set a passenger record and ensured a very high level of operational stability is also largely due to the great efforts of our operations operator. Not least the many employees at Metro Service and Hitachi, who made a great effort to ensure customers a good travelling experience,’ says Hanne Tærsbøl Schmidt, CEO of Metroselskabet.

The latest passenger record in the entire metro system was set on 29 November 2019 in connection with Black Friday, when almost 535,000 passengers travelled on M1, M2 and M3. The corresponding figure for all lines totalled 569,000 passengers during Friday's Tour de France stage. The newest metro lines M3/M4 also set a new record with a total of 305,000 passengers. This is 86,000 more passengers than the previous record set during Culture Night 2019.

‘As expected, it was the busiest day ever in the Metro's 20-year history with an extraordinary number of passengers. Of course, this created a lot of pressure on the Metro, which is why we ran rush hour operations all day and down to less than 2 minutes between each departure. I would like to say a big thank you - both to all our employees who were out at the stations to guide and help passengers - and to the passengers who showed patience and followed the instructions from our stewards’, Lars Toft Krag, Director of Operations at Metro's operator, Metro Service.

To ensure customers had the best travel experience during the Tour de France in Copenhagen, the DOT transport companies had created a special event ticket for DKK 30 that could be used for 12 hours on the S-train, Metro and bus. On the joint Tour de France website: www.transporttiltouren.dk, passengers could also easily get an overview of public transport.

Since its opening in 2002, more than one billion passengers have travelled on the Metro in Copenhagen, and currently the Metro carries more than 2 million passengers a week. In 2024, the existing M4 line will be extended to the south/west when 5 new metro stations open between Copenhagen Central Station and Ny Ellebjerg. An extension of line M4 towards Ydre Nordhavn and a completely new line M5 are also on the drawing board.
