The metro is installing defibrillators at all stations to increase safety
Facts about the new AEDs
- What is an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator): An AED is a battery-powered Defibrillator): A defibrillator is a battery-powered device that aims to restart the heart in the event of cardiac arrest. It works by attaching electrodes to the person's chest that send electric shocks to the heart. In many cases, these shocks can cause the heart to return to a normal rhythm.
- AED shocks and CPR: According to the the Danish Heart Foundation, it is crucial for survival in cardiac arrest that witnesses immediately initiate CPR - 30 compressions and 2 breaths - and continue until there are signs of life after AED shock or until professional help arrives.
Installation includes: All stations on all 4 metro lines M1, M2, M3 and M4. - Location: On the platform.
- Apps: The defibrillators appear in public apps such as Hjertestarter and Heart Runner.
Placing defibrillators directly at the stations increases the likelihood that AED shocks can be initiated within minutes, which can be a crucial factor for survival in cardiac arrest.
- ‘We are constantly working to improve the role of the Metro as an integral part of the city, also when it comes to safety and the ability to save lives. With defibrillators at all stations, we create a safe urban space where help is closer if an accident occurs,’ says Jakob Keinicke Sørensen, Head of Assets and Reinvestments, Metroselskabet.
- ‘We are very pleased that Metroselskabet has now installed defibrillators at all metro stations, as we know that witnesses stepping in quickly with a defibrillator has a major impact on the chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. With life-saving first aid and the use of an AED before the ambulance arrives, more than 1 in 3 people actually survive,’ says Anne Kaltoft, CEO of the Danish Heart Foundation.
All the new AEDs are located at platform level with clear signage and will be connected to the publicly available AED app, which is a map with clear locations of AEDs. It is also ensured that the defibrillators are included in the Heart Runner app. Metro stewards, who are already trained in first aid, will be informed of the locations so they can respond quickly in an emergency.
