New train platforms are ready at Ny Ellebjerg - and soon the Metro will follow

Posted: 8. november 2023
The new platforms for S-train line F at Ny Ellebjerg station, which will change its name to København Syd in a month, have been completed. The S-train line will once again run all the way to and from the station, which will be connected to the Metro from 2024.

Facts about the M4 extension to Sydhavn and Valby:

  • The M4 extension includes five new metro stations in Copenhagen: Havneholmen, Enghave Brygge, Sluseholmen, Mozarts Plads and Ny Ellebjerg (future København Syd).
  • When the line to Sydhavn and Valby opens in 2024, the total metro network will consist of 44 metro stations and 43 kilometres of track.
  • From 2024, you can get from Ny Ellebjerg (København Syd) to Rådhuspladsen in about 10 minutes and to Frederiksberg in about 13 minutes.
  • M4 Sydhavn is expected to have approximately 9 million passengers annually. Overall, around 135 million passengers are expected to travel on the Metro in 2024.

Ny Ellebjerg, soon to be renamed København Syd, is one of the five future metro stations in Sydhavn and Valby that will open in 2024. Since the start of the metro construction, the platforms for S-train line F (Ringbanen) have been moved closer to Gammel Køge Landevej, but now the metro construction is so far advanced that the platforms have been moved to their final location.

With the completion of the new platforms, the station has taken another step towards becoming the new central traffic hub, København Syd.

København Syd will be a gateway to and from Copenhagen, where many thousands of people will be able to easily switch between train and Metro every day - a major boost to public transport both regionally and nationally. København Syd will be an important complement to Copenhagen Central Station, and the Metro will meet three S-train lines, regional trains and trains to all of Denmark. We look forward to welcoming the many new customers,’ says Rebekka Nymark, CEO of Metroselskabet.

From next year, the Metro will run to København Syd, and with the Metro, three S-train lines and both regional and long-distance trains, up to 30,000 daily passengers are expected over time. København Syd is also expected to become a stop for international trains in the future.

Access to platforms from the turning area

The construction of the new platforms was planned in a collaboration between Banedanmark, DSB and Metroselskabet and has gone according to plan.

There are still a number of construction projects in connection with the remodelling of Ny Ellebjerg. Access to the new platforms for S-trains will therefore be from the turning area next to the construction of a shared underground transfer area, which from next year will connect the Metro with the other train lines and make it easy to switch between the different transport systems.
