Network connectivity on new metro lines ready for autumn

Securing network connectivity for passengers on the new metro lines has proved more difficult than expected. This summer, the installations are expected to be ready on part of the M4 Nordhavn, after which it will be rolled out in stages on the M3 M3 line as well.

Metroselskabet and telecoms operators 3, TDC, Telenor and Telia have established a partnership to ensure targeted, high-quality mobile coverage in connection with the recent expansion of the Copenhagen Metro. However, challenges with the installations have proved greater than expected, and as a result, mobile coverage has not yet been successfully delivered in the new metro lines.

From this summer, the installations are expected to be ready on line M4's branch from Sortedams Sø to Orientkaj, after which the network connection will be rolled out in stages on the rest of M4 and line M3. Full mobile coverage on the entire M3 and M4 is not expected until the autumn.

‘There are a number of challenges in installing this kind of sensitive equipment in tunnels that are already full of technical metro equipment. This is perhaps one of the reasons why many other metro systems in Europe and the rest of the world do not have such installations. We look forward to working with Teleindustrien to offer our joint customers this option on M3 and M4 as well,’ says Anne-Grethe Foss, CEO of Metroselskabet.

Metroselskabet and the telecoms companies have together drawn up a plan for the final installation work. The work takes into account that it will be carried out while the Metro is in operation - and with extra restrictions due to the corona crisis.

‘We are of course disappointed that customers cannot yet use their mobile phones when travelling on the new metro lines. We are working closely with Metroselskabet to ensure that the Metro has a well-functioning, robust and future-proof mobile network that can handle the growing volumes of data traffic. We expect that customers will soon be able to start using their mobile phones on the new metro lines,’ says Jakob Willer from Teleindustrien on behalf of the telecom companies.
