Installation work and rail grinding causes evening and night closure of the M3 line

Posted: 12. november 2020
Rail grinding and completion of the mobile network will affect the operation of metro lines M3 and M4 next week and during week 49. Instead, metro buses will be deployed.

Facts about the M3/M4 works in weeks 47 + 49

Rail grinding on M3/M4. The rails in the metro system are being grinded to ensure a smoother operation. Rail grinding is part of the regular maintenance work, which among other things contributes to a comfortable journey for customers and can reduce the noise level from metro operations.

Finalising mobile coverage on M3/M4. The Metroselskabet and telecoms companies are continuing to work on providing customers with mobile network coverage on the M3/M4. The work has proved more difficult than anticipated, but it is progressing steadily and the first stretch from Orientkaj to Marmorkirken now has mobile network installed. The mobile network is expected to be fully implemented in early 2021.

Despite COVID-19, with many people working from home, the Metro continues to transport more than 1 million passengers every week.
Therefore, Metroselskabet and its partners have tried to organise a wide range of installation and maintenance work during the hours when the Metro carries the fewest passengers.

However, with a driverless system running around the clock, it requires special planning to carry out major works such as rail grinding and completion of the mobile network with the least possible inconvenience to Metro passengers.

‘We currently have more than 150,000 passengers travelling with us at all times of the day and night. We take this task seriously when we plan installation and maintenance work, which is why we organise the work so that it takes place at times when it inconveniences as few passengers as possible, i.e. as far as possible during the evening and night hours,’ says Rebekka Nymark, CEO of Metroselskabet.

First section with mobile network is ready
Two major works will affect operations on the M3 and M4 in the coming weeks. Currently, rails are being sanded as part of the regular maintenance work.

At the same time, Metroselskabet and the telecom companies are finalising the installation of the mobile network on the M3 and M4. The installation work has proved more difficult than expected and the corona pandemic has also affected the progress of this work.

Therefore, the installation work will be given more space in the coming weeks so that passengers on the M3 and M4 can also be offered mobile networking. This service will be rolled out in stages over the coming months. The first stage from Orientkaj to Marmorkirken is now open with mobile network for customers.

Finally, the new driverless control system on the M3/M4 will be upgraded, which will correct the ‘teething problems’ that always come with a new complicated technical system.

Metro buses will be deployed here
Metro buses will be deployed at times, and based on the experience of recent weeks, Metroselskabet has decided to deploy more buses and to limit the number of passengers on the metro buses. In case of congestion, passengers are encouraged to seek alternative transport.

Metro buses will be deployed in week 47 and week 49 on line M3/M4 from 7pm to 6am Sunday to Wednesday. In week 47, metro buses will also be deployed on M1/M2 between 23:00 and 06:00 on Wednesday 18 November and Thursday 19 November - this is due to test runs of new trains.
