Copenhagen South expands with new platforms and increased services
- With the opening of the "Øresund Platforms", Copenhagen South has taken yet another step towards becoming a new regional transport hub in the capital — where passengers can travel by Metro, three S‑train lines, as well as regional and national trains. The new platforms also enable travel on international trains to Sweden and Germany. So far, Snälltåget have plans to call at Copenhagen South once per day from March 1, 2026, and twice per day from May 1, 2026.
- Copenhagen South provides a more robust transport network in the capital by helping to relieve passenger traffic at Copenhagen Central Station. This will be especially beneficial after the opening of the Fehmarn Belt Link in 2030, when increased international passenger and freight traffic is expected.
- With the opening of the new platforms, passengers gain more departures for journeys both within and outside the capital during daytime hours. Passengers at Copenhagen South will have a direct and fast route to and from the Airport in just 12 minutes. For the first time, there will be evening and weekend services between Slagelse and Copenhagen Airport — previously only available during daytime and with stops at Copenhagen Central Station.
- The new so‑called “Øresund Platforms” are 320 metres long, with access from the shared underground interchange area at the station, from Følager, from Poppelstykket, and from Gammel Køge Landevej.
From 14 December, passengers to and from Copenhagen South will have even more options to choose from – whether their journey is towards the Inner City, the Airport, or in the direction of Odense.
The station, which is on its way to becoming one of the capital’s major transport hubs, is already served by the Metro, three S‑train lines, regional and national trains – and with the opening of the so‑called “Øresund Platforms” there are now more another gateway in and out of Copenhagen apart from the busy Copenhagen Central Station.
Now passengers can travel from Copenhagen South to the Airport in just 12 minutes, compared to the previous 25–35 minutes, and choose between even more departures heading west calling in Sorø, Næstved, Slagelse, Nyborg, and other destinations.
The Øresund Platforms open on the same day as DSB’s new timetable takes effect. With Copenhagen South as a new possible InterCity station, DSB will now run more trains in and out of the capital area.
“With the opening, we are strengthening Copenhagen South’s position as a central transport hub with the Metro, S‑trains, and now even more long-distance and regional trains. On weekdays, DSB calls more than 600 times a day at the station with S‑trains, regional trains, and InterCity trains,” says Tony Bispeskov, Head of Information at DSB.
“The Øresund Platforms expand Copenhagen South as a transport hub where long‑distance trains, the S‑train network, and the Metro meet. This offers more options and shorter travel times for passengers, and helps create a more connected pattern in public transport,” says Anne Hougaard Olesen, Director of Strategic Prioritisation, Planning & Projects.
Banedanmark and Metroselskabet are the joint project owners of the new platforms. Metroselskabet has already rebuilt Copenhagen South, including a new common concourse area connecting all means of rail transport. The common concourse area and the Metro station at Copenhagen South opened in summer 2024 in connection with the extension of the Metro’s M4 line to Sydhavn and Valby – which has since opening carried around 75% more Metro passengers than expected.
On 14 December, an underground pedestrian tunnel will also open, making it easier to cross the station and move between, for example, Valby Idrætspark on the south side and educational institutions, as well as many businesses and residential areas on the north side.
“The entire rebuild of Copenhagen South has been completed in successful cooperation between DSB, Banedanmark, and Metroselskabet — on time and on budget. For passengers and locals, Copenhagen South will now be much easier to access and navigate, and changing between modes of transport will be simpler. We are now truly unlocking the station’s potential as a strong national transport hub,” says Mikkel Kjær Jensen, Director at Metroselskabet.
Finally, in addition to improved accessibility at the station itself, a new station square will open at the southwest exit towards Følager.
