Art descends into the Metro with opera singing and a two-meter-long plastic arm

This year, the CHART art fair is focusing on art in public spaces – and the Metro will serve as both a means of transport and a stage for artistic experiences.

When CHART, the Nordic region's leading art fair, takes over Copenhagen from August 28 to 31, 2025, the theme will be Art in Public Spaces, and the fair is ready with a number of new initiatives to reach a wider audience—including involving the Metro in the program.

The primary task of the Metro is to get people from A to B quickly. But the Metro is also an urban space in motion, where passengers can encounter art in a new way. By participating in CHART, we are emphasizing that this underground space can also be a setting for something more – a place where we can experience something together and where new ideas can emerge.

Fakta om Metroen

  • All four metro lines – M1, M2, M3, and M4 – run to Kongens Nytorv, where you can experience the art performance I AM EXTREME.
The M4 line has just been nominated for Best Cultural Experience of the City 2025 for its artwork at the five new metro stations in Sydhavn and Valby. You can vote until Sunday, August 31, here.
  • Get the most out of CHART with the Metro's 1-day ticket, which allows you to travel freely on the Metro all day on Saturday and Sunday for only DKK 50. Buy your ticket in the Rejsebillet app.

Wild video art and ritual tribute

As soon as you step onto the platform at the metro stations, you can experience a series of inspiring video works produced by four international artists – Elina Brotherus, Janaina Tschäpe, Heino Aho, and Valentin Ranger.

The Kongens Nytorv metro station also provides the setting for part of the 40-minute art performance I AM EXTREME by Swedish artist duo LILITH – an experience that involves, among other things, a two-meter-long plastic arm and an opera singer. In this work, the duo will carry an oversized arm while performing ritual tributes to the variations and imperfections of the body.

Art in motion

CHART also invites you to experience art in urban spaces with various walking, running, and cycling routes that take you past iconic works in the cityscape and at metro stations, such as Tal R's mural at Østerbro St. or Jeppe Hein's balloons at Kongens Nytorv St.

In addition, the new M4 line is an art experience in itself, with its integrated works of art by leading Danish artists at the five stations in Valby and Sydhavn, which CHART encourages everyone to go out and experience.

"Copenhagen is home to a wealth of fantastic works of art in public spaces – from sculptures to gable paintings – which we often overlook in our everyday lives. With CHART 2025, we want to democratize the art experience and create new ways of encountering art. The metro shows us how art can become part of the journey: here, it provides a respite between A and B, where you don't just look at the works, but step into them yourself," says CHART director Julie Quottrup Silbermann.
