Metroselskabet welcomes a new advisory team as consultants for Metroselskabets largest reinvestment project to date. The task involves future-proofing the two oldest metro lines, M1 and M2, after more than twenty years in operation by integrating a new signaling system and 42 new metro trains. The chosen advisory team consists of COWI, WSP and Egis. The team is supplemented by Nordic Signals, Strides (SMRT Corporation), and Implement as sub-consultants.

About the Reinvestment Project: New Trains and New Signaling Systems

  • The project aims to future-proof the two oldest metro lines, M1/M2, by integrating a new signaling system and a new fleet consisting of 42 metro trains. It is a complex task, and a similar project has not been seen before in a system with round-the-clock operation.
  • The project is expected to be fully implemented by 2035.
  • Number of passengers on M1/M2 in 2024: 70.9 million.
  • Operational stability for M1/M2 in 2024: 98.9%.

"We are glad to welcome COWI, WSP, and Egis as advisors. The team brings strong international experience in system integration of operational systems. These are important competencies in relation to the major integration task we face when we replace the core systems of the M1/M2 lines over the next ten years. We look forward to a good collaboration," says Signe Bondo Ellegaard, Project Director at Metroselskabet.

The replacement of signaling systems and trains is Metroselskabet's largest project of this kind to date. It is a complex task that has not been seen before in a system with round-the-clock operation.

"The future-proofing in the form of replacing trains and signaling systems in an operational metro system differs from the projects Metroselskabet has previously undertaken. I am confident that the advisory team will contribute competent advice so that together we can tackle the major task ahead of us, while ensuring a good passenger experience for our increasing number of passengers," says Signe Bondo Ellegaard, Project Director at Metroselskabet.

The advisory team is also looking forward to the collaboration

The advisory team is pleased to have been chosen for the significant task.

“We look forward to helping to future-proof the Copenhagen Metro, which is a brilliant example of efficient and reliable driverless public transport. In a strong consortium with WSP, Egis and other partners, we will draw on experience from several similar metro systems in, among others, Singapore, Lyon, Lille and Paris, and we are proud to continue the years of close collaboration with Metroselskabet to strengthen mobility for an increasing number of passengers,” says Project Director at COWI Pietro Zingarelli.

Metroselskabet, together with the advisors, will begin the task immediately. The project is expected to be fully implemented by 2035.
