Marine archaeological preliminary investigations in connection with M5

As part of the preparatory work for M5, the Viking Ship Museum is conducting a preliminary survey of the area south of Prøvestensbroen.

The preliminary marine archaeological survey, which aims to identify the need for a full-scale marine archaeological excavation, began today, April 22, and will run for approximately 14 days. Based on the findings of the preliminary survey, an assessment will be made of the need for a more extensive excavation.

The Viking Ship Museum is interested in the area because, during the expansion of Amager Strandpark and Helgoland, interesting objects and tools from the early Stone Age were found, and the area south of Prøvestensbroen is located on the same coastline.

The preliminary investigation will be carried out from a boat with divers who will examine the seabed in the area by drilling holes to determine the appearance of the terrain after the last ice age (the post-glacial terrain). Suction holes will then be made to collect material, which will be taken on board the boat for examination.
