News from the board meeting

Posted: 26. september 2025

In August, the Metro carried 11.5 million passengers, which was 5% more than the same month last year. Year-on-month growth is 10% compared to 2024. Part of the increase in travel comes from the many major events in Copenhagen, which in August made the Metro extraordinarily busy. Four Ed Sheeran concerts on Amager, the DHL Relay in Fælledparken and a Champions League match in Parken resulted in a new weekly record with almost 3 million passengers. The month also saw the busiest Wednesday and Thursday ever.

The increase in passenger numbers can also be attributed to a very safe and stable operation of the Metro. In August, operations on the M1/M2 and M3/M4 had an overall punctuality of 99.5% and 99.0% respectively.

At the meeting, the Board was briefed on Metroselskabet's work on a new passenger forecast and passenger budget. The forecasts are crucial both as a basis for decision-making for new metro lines and as input for the passenger and long-term budget for the existing lines. The board is expected to consider proposals for an updated passenger budget in the fall of 2026.

The Board was also informed that Metroselskabet has appointed MT Højgaard with Rambøll and Cobe as partners on the extension of the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn. Together with Metroselskabet, they will develop the project in a collaboration phase before the actual construction begins. The contract is expected to be signed in early October after the 10-day standstill period has expired, and further work on concept design, among other things, will start immediately thereafter. The final construction contract is expected to be approved in 2027, after which work can enter the execution phase.

"With the M4 to Ydre Nordhavn, we're not just building an extension of the Metro - we're building the city of the future. The collaboration phase with MT Højgaard, Rambøll and Cobe gives us the opportunity to think visionary, find the best solutions and create a Metro that both ties the capital closer together and shows the way for how green infrastructure can shape urban development for decades to come. This is precisely where we lay the foundation for a project that will stand strong when we start the actual construction in 2027," says Metroselskabet's Chairman of the Board, Tommy Ahlers.

Finally, the board was informed that Metroselskabet has sold the area by København Syd station to the project developer group FB Gruppen A/S, which together with the contractor Ingcon A/S has been chosen to realize the plans for the new district. The district is located on top of the underground metro station and close to other forms of public transportation. The plan includes 40,000 m² of housing, businesses, shops and the possibility of a hotel with direct access to the Metro, S-train and regional trains. The master plan prioritizes mixed urban life, green urban spaces and climate-friendly transport. The local plan is expected in public consultation in 2026.
