At the meeting, the Board discussed the COVID-19 crisis and its significant consequences for the Metro. In recent weeks, the Board has received regular reports from Metroselskabet on the measures and handling that have been initiated as a result of clear requests from the government and authorities.
Among other things, the company has launched a very broad and visible passenger information campaign, quickly initiated extra cleaning throughout the system, and tried to encourage customers to travel outside rush hour or find other means of transport.
"As a result of Metroselskabet's efforts, the number of passengers has fallen by approximately 80 percent. This shows that the measures taken towards customers have been effective and that passengers have followed the recommendations, so that the Metro can run for the benefit of those who need it. That is the most important thing right now. But it is clear that the company is also facing a period in which both the short-term and long-term consequences in terms of passenger numbers and finances are expected to be very significant," says Jørn Neergaard Larsen, Chairman of the Board of Metroselskabet.
Based on a briefing, the board discussed the possible risks and consequences that the COVID-19 crisis is expected to bring in both the short and long term. Among other things, there will be a reassessment of the previous assumptions for passenger development, which also means that Metroselskabet faces a major and important task in getting passengers back into the system on the other side of the current crisis.
The Board of Directors was also briefed on the ongoing monitoring of Metroselskabet's construction activities. Production is facing major challenges, and parts of the work have either come to a standstill or are running at significantly reduced capacity. Together with the contractors, Metroselskabet is focusing on ensuring that employees are taken care of as best as possible and that the work is carried out under safe conditions.
It is still expected that M4 Nordhavn will open as planned on March 28 to ensure more departures on the Copenhagen H-Østerport route [editorial note: M4 Nordhavn opened to passengers on March 28]. However, Metroselskabet continues to urge passengers to exercise great caution and only make necessary journeys by bus, train, and metro. Given the current risk situation, both the celebration of the opening and the official inauguration of the new metro line have, of course, been canceled.
Finally, the board discussed Metroselskabet's ongoing work on climate adaptation and preparedness in relation to storm surges and cloudbursts.
