- 14 metro trains
- Control and Maintenance Centre
- Signalling system, platform screen doors, traction power, passenger information system, SCADA system, radio system and various other systems

- The contract is expected to be signed at the end of 2027
Before the summer, Metroselskabet put the contract for the transport system for the forthcoming metro line M5 out to tender. The tender has attracted strong interest, and Metroselskabet has now reviewed the applications received and selected three companies/consortia to proceed to the next phase of the tender process.
We are pleased with the strong interest the market has shown in this task. We have received strong and experienced bids for who will deliver the very heart and brain of the new metro line – the trains, the signalling system and everything else needed to get M5 running
About M5
-
Copenhagen is growing, and with M5 the city gets a new metro line that will connect existing neighbourhoods, new urban development areas and the overall metro network more closely together.
-
M5 is a new, independent metro line with nine stations, to be built in two phases.
-
M5 will provide efficient public transport to both existing urban areas that currently lack metro service and new urban development areas, including Østhavnen.
-
At the same time, M5 will increase capacity across the overall metro network and ensure that the Metro can keep pace with rising passenger numbers in future, particularly along the harbour crossing, where there are already large numbers of passengers during peak hours.
-
The first stage of M5, due to open in 2036, will comprise five underground stations and one elevated station.
-
At København H, M5 passengers will be able to easily change to metro lines M3 and M4, as well as intercity, regional and S-train services.
-
At DR Byen, passengers will be able to change between M1 and M5, while at Lergravsparken, passengers will be able to change between M2 and M5.
M5 tender enters next phase
The tender for the transport system contract is the result of three years of market dialogue, during which Metroselskabet has been in close contact with potential suppliers to assess the market's capacity and interest. The purpose of the dialogue has been to structure a tender that attracts more qualified bidders and, ultimately, ensures that Metroselskabet enters into the best possible contract.
The three pre-qualified applicants are:
- CAF-Holbøll (consortium) with TSO as subcontractor
- Hitachi Rail STS S.p.A.
- Stadler Rail Schweiz AG and Colas Rail SAS (consortium) with Aarsleff Rail, Per Aarsleff, CG Jensen as subcontractors and EGIS as sub-consultant
"I would like to thank all applicants for their interest and strong commitment throughout the pre-qualification process. We now look forward to continuing the good dialogue on how best to deliver this project," says Mikkel Kjær Jensen.
In addition to the trains and the signalling system, the M5 transport system contract also includes the construction of a new Control and Maintenance Centre at Prøvestenen in the Port of Copenhagen, which will house the daily operation, servicing and stabling of M5's trains.
The tender is being conducted as a design and build with competitive dialogue procedure. Over the coming period, Metroselskabet will engage in close dialogue with the three pre-qualified bidders on the solution, with the dialogue also giving Metroselskabet the opportunity to adjust the tender documents before final tenders are submitted.
The contract is expected to be signed at the end of 2027, and the first phase of M5 is planned to open in 2036.
